Much has been made of Amy Winehouse's hard-partying ways in the wake of her death on July 23, but those who knew her best are saying her final days were quiet and relaxed.
In a report by People, friends of the late singer are saying she mostly stayed in her London home and spent time with her mother, Janis. As previously reported, Winehouse had a routine checkup with a doctor the night before her death as part of her most recent effort to get sober. She was reportedly given a clean bill of health.
"She spent most days at home writing," an unnamed friend told People. This contradicts other tabloid reports, as recapped by the Huffington Post, that said Winehouse was in the midst of a long drug binge. One report said that she was seen buying cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and ketamine the night before her death, but police reported that no drugs were found in her home when they arrived at the scene. A bodyguard discovered her body, alone in bed, on the afternoon of the 23rd.
Janis Winehouse has said that Amy "seemed out of it" the day before her death and that the singer's last words to her mother were "I love you, mum." As Janis told the Daily Mirror, "They are the words I will always treasure. I'm glad I saw her when I did."
Winehouse's funeral was held on Tuesday, July 26, and her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who is serving a 32-month prison sentence for burglary and possession of a firearm, did not attend. Reports said that he was denied a release from jail, and that Winehouse's father Mitch had said he wasn't welcome anyway.
His current girlfriend, and the mother of his son, however, says that wasn't quite the case. "He did not ask to be at Amy's funeral," Sarah Aspin told the Sun. "There is no way he would want to be there in handcuffs. He has too much respect for Amy and her family to do that."
As Spinner previously reported, Winehouse's initial autopsy was inconclusive. The full inquest will take place on Oct. 26
