In a new interview, Kelly Clarkson takes issue with the type of showmanship (or should we say "showwomanship") that Beyonce and her ilk employ when they perform live. So is she actually throwing shade at Queen Bey?
Not quite — at least we don’t think so. The outspoken ‘American Idol‘ winner talked to press about her ‘Duets,’ and how she wants the focus to be on the music over the wardrobe of the show.
Clarkson revealed that she worries that producers and press will pressure her protege, Jordan Meredith, into conforming to an image. "I need [Jordan] to be comfortable on stage and people are pushing her to wear something else and that is not our focus," Clarkson told PEOPLE (via ContactMusic). "Especially in a competition you need to be comfortable and confident."
She added, "Not only can the music be formulaic, but the attire can be formulaic. Just like music, with style there is room for everything and it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is that person’s thing."
What isn’t Kel’s thing? Costumes! In what may have been a reference to Katy Perry or Lady Gaga, Clarkson said, "This is such a funny industry. Sometimes I turn on awards shows and pop stars are wearing alien costumes. I’m like, ‘That’s cool for you but ain’t no way in hell someone is going to convince me to wear that on stage."’
Clarkson, who usually performs barefoot, specifically called out Queen Bey. ‘I don’t want to wear no stilettos! I am not a model and I am not Beyonce," she laughed. "It is not going to happen."
We don’t think she meant any harm towards Bey, and knowing Kel, she was probably actually paying Beyonce a compliment. Not everyone can move like that in heels that high and carry a tune at the same time!
