New Music: Justin Bieber f/ Drake – ‘Trust Issues (Remix)’

Justin Bieber and Drake

Justin Bieber has tried his hand at rapping (see Chris Brown’s “Ladies Love Me”) and now he remixes Drake’s “Trust Issues.” The teen idol, who will release a Christmas album this fall, sings Drizzy’s slowed down lyrics, but keeps it clean for his young fans. His fellow Canadian’s rap verse remains in tact.

Is this a hint at the direction the Biebs will be taking on his next album? Hitmakers Danja and Kevin Cossom previously told Rap-Up TV that his new material will be edgier. “What I’m creating for him I think is definitely a more mature sound. That’s where he’s headed now,” said Danja.

Kanye West and Jay-Z

The MTV Video Music Awards are getting a dose of rap royalty. Jay-Z and Kanye West will bless the stage at Sunday’s show.

E! Online reports that the dynamic duo has been added to the already star-studded lineup. Details surrounding their performance are so secretive that even MTV’s crew doesn’t know exactly when Jay and
‘Ye will appear or what song(s) off their No. 1 album Watch the Throne they will perform. Will Beyoncé join them for “Lift Off” and/or will we see the television debut of “Otis”?

Jay’s other half will be performing her own set in addition to opener Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Adele, Bruno Mars, and Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo. Tony Bennett will lead the tribute to the late Amy Winehouse and surprise artists will salute Britney Spears.

The 2011 VMAs will air live from the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles tomorrow at 9 p.m.

Big Sean, Kreayshawn, and Tyler, the Creator on MTV’s ‘When I Was 17′ [Video]

Tyler, the Creator

Before they were nominated for Best New Artist at the VMAs, Big Sean, Kreayshawn, and Tyler, the Creator were regular teens finding their way. The breakout stars were featured on the latest episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17.”

\Prior to being signed by Kanye West to G.O.O.D. Music, Detroit MC Big Sean was a shy teen who wore oversized clothing, battle rapped after school, and was dumped by his high school sweetheart because he was too nice.

Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator was still up to no good, getting caught stealing markers out of a classmate’s backpack, pulling his pants down at a church-organized talent show, and being chased after egging someone’s car.

“Gucci Gucci” was not even recorded when Oakland-raised rapper Kreayshawn was a wild teen getting kicked out of school, painting fire hydrants and washing cement to get her GED, and cleaning up after her crazy cat.

Watch them reflect on good and bad memories from their not-so-distant teen years in the full episode.

Mario Reveals Details on New Single, Album

Mario is ready to break down “The Walls” with his new music. Rap-Up TV caught up with the R&B crooner on the red carpet at the BMI Urban Awards where he shared details about his new Rico Love-penned single featuring Fabolous, scheduled to drop in the next two weeks.

“It’s an incredible R&B record. It’s classic, it’s definitely going to stand out from everything that’s going on,” explained Mario, who gave us a preview on the spot. “It really pays homage to women who are comfortable with being sexy outside and they’re sexy with their men when they get home.”

His as-yet-untitled fifth album, which features production from The Monsters, Young Yonny, and The Underdogs, is 90 percent complete and he anticipates a November or January release. “I’m getting back to the basis of R&B and what I do, being a vocalist and making sure that it’s a lot different from the rest of my projects—making sure it’s classic.”

Also slated to appear on the album is a “club banger” called “Roosevelt (Drop a Dime).” “Hopefully I’ll have Big Sean or Rick Ross on that as a feature,” he added. “It’s gonna be one of the biggest records this year. I promise you that.”

Nas and Wiz Khalifa

Hip-hop’s biggest names came together under one roof to salute the one and only Snoop Dogg at the 11th Annual BMI Urban Awards at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater on Friday night (Aug. 26). New Music: Lil Wayne f/ Enrique Iglesias – ‘How to Love (Spanglish Remix)’

Lil Wayne and Enrique Iglesias

Lil Wayne has dabbled in rock and R&B, and now he crosses language barriers. On the eve of Tha Carter IV‘s release, the Young Money jefe enlists Enrique Iglesias for a Spanglish remix to hit top 5 hit “How to Love.” Weezy keeps his original English verses intact, leaving the Spanish to the Latin heartthrob.

Producer Detail explained how the bilingual collaboration came together. “It’s never been done in hip-hop. The first rapper to do a Spanish version along with a Spanish icon. We make history!” he told Rap-Up.com. “Wayne’s a Libra, I’m a Libra. We’re on the same path creatively, so if I believe it could be done a certain way and he feels that way, nothing’s gonna stop us from doing it.”

Drake Accepts BMI Songwriter of the Year Award [Video]

Drake

Drake was the big winner at Friday night’s BMI Urban Awards in Hollywood. The Canadian superstar picked up numerous awards throughout the evening including Songwriter of the Year. He dedicated it to his mother and uncle, and called out former Universal Motown president Sylvia Rhone, who told him he’d never make it.

“I really want to dedicate this award to my mother who never gave me the definition of a word in my life,” said Drizzy. “I would always ask her what does this mean, and she would always make me go look it up and I would have to look through all these words and I would start to learn words and build a vocabulary that was somewhat impressive.

“And to my uncle who sat me down after Sylvia Rhone told me that I didn’t have what it took to make it in the music industry—to my uncle who sat me down and told me that I should keep on going because I have something special. And I also want to dedicate this to Kanye West, to André 3000, and to Phonte of Little Brother because their words always inspired me—and to Snoop, man, thank you for letting me share this night with you.”

T-Pain Wrote 'Good Life' for Kanye After MC Ordered Food

T-Pain, known for his brand of rapping and singing -- after all, he coined the term "rappa-ternt-sanga," which was also the name of his debut album -- is a musical mastermind, having taught himself the art of production as well as playing a wealth of instruments, piano and guitar included. In a recent interview, conducted by music industry radio veteran Nic Harcourt, the Tallahasee native reveals some interesting tidbits involving his recording history.

During his in-depth 'At: Guitar Center' podcast, T-Pain speaks on his influences, how collaboration challenges him and the pressure to stay relevant in today's changing music climate.

The 25-year-old notes Busta Rhymes, Cee Lo Green and Andre 3000 as lyricists he looked to while getting his start as a member of the Nappy Headz rap outfit. "Anybody that wasn't afraid to step outside of the music box," he reveals of the unique artists who inspired him on the come-up. "They had more courage to do something different even when everyone else was doing the same thing because that's what was working or that's what was in or hip."

From rapper to singer to producer, the self-taught entertainer, who began focusing more on his production career in 2003, opens up about how it wasn't part of his upbringing to learn the fundamentals of music. "People see me play the piano and pick up a guitar with ease, and say, "Well, who taught you?" he explains. "I don't see how everyone's taught how to do things. It's not really available to everybody. Growing up the way I did, it definitely wasn't available to me. We don't have guitars in Tallahassee; we don't have pianos in Tallahassee."

His work as a beatmaker, which sparked his interest in creating the T-Pain Effect recording software -- he's also off that Auto-Tune movement -- garnered him respect from major players in the hip-hop world. Though he crafts beats, his talented songwriting capabilities earned him studio time with Kanye West, most notably working on 'Good Life,' which scored him a Grammy award in 2008. Pain breaks down what inspires him to write lyrics during a collaboration and reveals just what he was thinking about when writing to the Chi-town MC's song.

"Really, it's just feeling their vibe and seeing the aura of the whole room and the people they hang around and even like the stuff they order to eat. It's like really a lot of little things that go into me doing features with somebody," he continues. "Like when I did 'Good Life' for Kanye, I came up with that concept because he was ordering lobster and Cristal, but he didn't know I was coming up with these things in my head as he was ordering this stuff. I pulled up in a regular Cadillac Escalade SUV; he's got a driver and a Maybach outside waiting on him. It's like, this is the good life. So you know, automatically as soon as I heard the beat, I'm like, this is what this song is about."

J. Cole Talks Jay-Z & Kanye West As Competition, Relationship With Rihanna, & Internet Hate

 J. Cole Talks Jay Z & Kanye West As Competition, Relationship With Rihanna, & Internet Hate
In a Q&A with VIBE J.Cole discusses a few things from Jay-Z & Kanye West being his competition, the hate he obtains from the streets of the internet & his relationship with Rihanna whom he toured with recently.

On the hate from the Internet
Nah, nah. I take things for what they are. If someone is saying something and they sound dumb as shit, then they’re opinion is not valid. But if you sound like you’re making some sense… a lot of times it’s people assuming, acting like they know what’s going on. So you have to understand that these people’s opinions are misguided. There’s so many critics, but they don’t actually participate in the creation or consumption of music. It’s easy to look from the outside. It’s natural, I talk about other artists too… who’s better, who’s fucking up… but you really don’t know. I just happen to have a foot on both sides. But when I can tell it’s coming from a genuine place of concern it’s both flattering and annoying.
Jay-Z & Kanye West as Competitors
It definitely feels different. Now it feels more competitive, before I felt like it was so out of reach. But now it’s like ‘They want to drop this shit a month and half before my shit comes out? Damn. Let me take my shit up. Let me add to mine.’ So the competitiveness kicks in now because I’m in the game. I may be very low, but my sights are high. So it’s very different. Even when Kanye’s album dropped last year I was still on some fan shit. But now I finally feel like I’m in the game.
 on Rihanna
I can see that that’s true, because she’s cool as shit. One of the biggest pop stars in the world and she never once made me or anyone else around feel like that. You would’ve thought she was an unsigned artist or something, she’s mad cool.

Chris Brown and Calvin Harris settle “Yeah X3″ dispute

Chris Brown and Calvin Harris settle Yeah X3 dispute
Chris Brown and UK based DJ, Calvin Harris, have sorted out their dispute regarding Brown’s song Yeah X3. Calvin called Breezy out because the song sounds similar to his track I’m Not Alone. Calvin tells BBC:
He was gutted about the whole situation. Once he heard the original he was like, ‘Wow. OK,’ and sorted it out. He gave me half that track. He released ‘Beautiful People’ and now I just love him because that is a tune. We’re fine. We’re great. Chris Brown’s like my best friend now.
