Wiz Khalifa Rolls with Amber Rose to Vegas Birthday Bash [Video]

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose

Wiz Khalifa shares more candid footage from his 24th birthday bash in Las Vegas earlier this month. The weed aficionado got high as he celebrated with his closest friends and girlfriend Amber Rose in the Playboy suite at the Palms. Dressed to impress in a tux, he blew out the candles on his marijuana leaf-shaped cake as he was serenaded with “Happy Birthday.”

“I’m not making no wish ’cause everything that I fuckin’ could wish for has already come true,” said Wiz during his heartfelt speech.

The party continued downstairs at the nightclub, where he made out with Amber and challenged his friend to a glowstick dance off as a remix of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” played. Join in the fun below and catch Part 1 here.

Meet Roc Nation’s Newest Star Rita Ora

Rita Ora

Now that J. Cole is out the gate, Roc Nation’s Rita Ora goes up to bat. The 20-year-old singer introduces herself to the world in her new video diary series, promising to show the good, bad, and ugly. Ora, who moved from Kosovo to England at a young age, takes us to the Notting Hill area of London where she frequents and to the studio as she records her debut.

“Rita’s been hiding for too long, this is now time to show you all why I’m on Roc Nation,” says the blonde bombshell, who’s been working on her album with heavy-hitters including Drake, The-Dream, Tricky Stewart, and Stargate. Listen to her song “R.I.P.” in the background.

If you want to hear more, Rita is taking requests. She will sing a suggested topic each week as part of her ongoing “Lullaby” series.

Bruno Mars Gets Dramatic on 'It Will Rain' -- Listen

If he ever gets tired of the whole retro soul-man look, Bruno Mars might consider kicking it vampire-style. He could even keep the Ray Bans.

On his brand new single, 'It Will Rain,' released today and slated to appear on the soundtrack for 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1,' the Hawaiian-born showman embraces the melodramatic spirit of author Stephenie Meyer's mega-popular fantasy series.

Mars opens the ballad with a line straight out of an angsty teen's mash note -- "If you ever leave me, babe/ leave some morphine at my door" -- and from there, he ratchets up the emotion, channeling Michael Jackson over a lush string accompaniment.

"There'll be no sunlight, if I lose you, baby," he sings on the hook.

In real life, the 'Grenade' singer is hardly dwelling in darkness. Time magazine named him one of this year's most influential people, and back in February, he nabbed a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, one of seven awards he was up for.

He's got the pop audience on lock, and now that he's adding Twihards to the mix, it might take garlic, holy water or a really sharp stake to end his musical supremacy.

Petey Pablo Sentenced to 35 Months in Federal Prison

North Carolina rapper Petey Pablo was sentenced to 35 months in federal prison at a hearing in the US District Court in New Bern, North Carolina, earlier today, according to reports.

The 38-year-old 'Raise Up' rapper, born Moses Barrett III, was arrested on Sept. 11, 2010, after attempting to smuggle a loaded 9mm handgun through airport security at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, en route to the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. After further investigation, the handgun was revealed to have been stolen from a home in Gardena, Calif. back in 2005.

Striking a plea bargain with the prosecution, Petey pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen firearm on March 16, avoiding the other charges stemming from the incident. He faced up to 10 years in prison.

"I mean, I always feel confident. In the end, the truth always comes to the light," the former Timbaland protégé recently told HipHopDX, regarding his sentencing. "And, regardless of what the outcome is, I'm a man. And whatever has been written in my book of life is written in my book of life. So whatever the outcome of any situation is, I have no choice but to handle it."

There is no word as to when Petey will begin serving out his sentence.

Topless Rihanna Told to Cover Up by Farmer on Video Shoot

Known for her barely-there outfits, the beautiful Rihanna was scolded by Irish farmer Alan Graham while filming the video for her new Calvin Harris-assisted single, 'We Found Love.'

RiRi caused quite a stir in Bangor, Northern Ireland, on Monday (Sept. 26), when she sported several small bikini tops while walking though a grassy field on the set of her forthcoming clip, a promo for the lead single off her as-yet-untitled sixth studio album.

The 23-year-old's wardrobe included an open flannel shirt over a red bandana-turned-bra, a patriotic stars-and-stripes bikini top with a cut-off vest and low riding jeans, and finally a black mesh crop top with nothing else underneath.

But apparently, it wasn't the risque tops that bothered the humble farmer whose property hosted the shoot. Rather, it was the fact that at one point, Rihanna reportedly rocked no top at all that rubbed him the wrong way. After RiRi broke the no-nudity dress code, Graham climbed off of his tractor and approached the singer directly.
"I thought it was inappropriate," Graham told the BBC. "I requested them to stop and they did. I had my conversation with Rihanna and I hope she understands where I'm coming from. We shook hands."

"From my point of view, it was my land, I have an ethos and I felt it was inappropriate. I wish no ill will against Rihanna and her friends. Perhaps they could acquaint themselves with a greater God."
Graham told Ireland's national television broadcaster RTE that he actually kicked Rihanna from his field after the incident. "I felt the thing was inappropriate," he said, "and I requested that the filming end at that stage."

Drake to Perform on 'Saturday Night Live'

NBC has announced that Young Money rapper Drake will be appearing on 'Saturday Night Live' on Oct. 15.

Less than two weeks before the release of Drake's highly anticipated sophomore album, 'Take Care,' which drops on Oct. 24, Drake will take the stage as SNL's musical guest, alongside host Anna Faris.

While it is not yet known whether he will be acting in a sketch, the 'Marvin's Room' rapper's 'SNL' appearance will be his first, on the heels of much-hyped performances by fellow Young Money rappers Nicki Minaj, who made headlines with her scene-stealing turn as a geek stalker, and Lil Wayne's joint performance with Eminem back in December.

Drake recently posted his forthcoming album's artwork on his blog, along with a personal note to fans. "Feels like it's been so long," he wrote. "Are we just used to getting what we want right away? Maybe our anticipation is justified by the fact that we genuinely cannot wait to share a moment again? Either way, your life and mine are scheduled to meet on October 24 ... I wouldn't miss it for the world."

Nicki Minaj Says Fans Get 'Life' on New LP, Talks Taylor Swift

Nicki Minaj is staying relatively quiet about the follow-up to her 'Pink Friday' debut, however, she has released details of what the record will do to fans once they get a chance to listen to it.

The Queens native channeled her alter ego Roman, speaking in a British accent, to explain what her Barbs can expect from her forthcoming LP. "All I can say is that Roman will definitely be a humongous part of the follow-up to 'Pink Friday,'" Minaj shared with Billboard. "I can't talk about anything else that has to do with the sophomore album. All I can say is that I'm working on it and the fans are gonna get their life and then some."

As for her current radio smash 'Super Bass,' which sits at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, she expressed her gratitude for a blonde country artist, who helped catapult the track to new heights. "I want to publicly say again that Taylor Swift really launched that single into another stratosphere with just tweeting about it and rapping it and stuff, so thank you Taylor," the 28-year-old stated. "And she's so cute and she's like a big bowl of ice cream."

The Young Money frontwoman performed the hit song alongside Taylor Swift at a concert in L.A. last month.

Amber Rose Says She'd 'Kick' Kanye West, 'Die' for Wiz Khalifa

Amber Rose has finally broken her silence regarding her highly publicized relationship with Kanye West. In an interview with Hot 97's Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg show on Wednesday (Sept. 28), the blonde, Philadelphia native opens up about her past romance with the 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' creator, her future endeavors and her current love, Wiz Khalifa.

The former stripper explains how she made no gag deal with West, preventing her from talking about their past, but rather chooses not to devote time to speaking of him. "I don't have to speak abut someone that I really loved and cared about in that way," reveals Rose, who is planning the release of a book that details her life, friendships and romances. "Like, we once really cared about each other."

'Ye has taken jabs at Rose through a Chris Rock monologue featured on 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.' His ex states that actions like that prove he's still upset over their breakup. "I just feel like, you know, he's bitter and I'm not," Rose says. "I don't care. I don't feel the need to say anything about him to validate who I am. I'm so much more than that. I'm a writer."

As for her new beau, Pittsburgh rhymer Wiz, the curvaceous eye-catcher seems to be head-over-heels in love. "I've never loved like this, in my life," Rose shares. "I would die for him. That's how much I love him. We will get married. We are gonna have babies. But um, we have time. We have the rest of our lives."

Host Peter Rosenberg went on to ask Amber Rose which of the two would win in a throwdown: Wiz or West. "I think [Wiz] would beat the crap out of Kanye," she admits, "and I'd kick him while he's down. I'd be right there with him."

Lil Wayne's 'How to Love' Gets a Remix From Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne
Justin Bieber's YouTube reign continues with his most recent remix of Lil Wayne's 'How to Love.' According to his Twitter account, the singer just couldn't sleep one night so he decided to put a delicate and acoustified spin on Weezy's sweet 'n' lazy track. "Trying to sleep. until then happy birthday," Justin tweeted to 'Tha Carter IV' creator.

As Idolator points out, JB has been heavy on cover songs ever since he performed a medley of Usher's 'You Got it Bad,' Matchbox 20's '3AM,' and pop hit 'Baby' at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Selena Gomez' main squeeze definitely has the vocal prowess to pull off a song that's not really sung by a human being (i.e. Wayne's Auto-Tune).

Check out 'How to Love' below. Do you think Justin did it justice?

Def Jam Signee Miranda Brooke Admits She's a 'Hater' -- Listen

A new chanteuse is making her mark in the R&B spectrum and her name is Miranda Brooke. Hailing from Chattanooga, Tenn., the beauty with the honey-colored tresses isn't keeping it sweet on her introductory single 'Hater.'

"It's a song about ugly feelings," admits Miranda, who was signed to Bu Vision/Def Jam by Akon's brother and Def Jam A&R Bu Thiam. "It's about jealousy, insecurity, and weakness, but it's honest."

On the mid-tempo, Sham-produced groove, Miranda waxes poetic about feeling ill will towards the new girl that has the man she once gave her heart to. "Now she gets the best of you, while the rest of you is left back with me/ She don't have a clue just what to do with you/ I don't like her, I'm a hater/ You're in love, I'm alone, it's not fair/ She gets the good guy, I got the player," she croons.

The performer, who grew up belting out melodies in church, calls on artists like Aaliyah and Xscape as musical influences. She even takes a page from the rhyming handbook of TLC and Missy Elliott. "Calling myself a singer limits me," she says. "I'm a performer. I can sing, I can dance, and I can rap."

Miranda Brooke is currently crafting her debut album with producers and songwriters Jermaine Dupri, Sean Garrett and Bryan-Michael Cox.

Kanye West Handpicks Fabrics for Womenswear Line

Kanye West, whose womenswear line is scheduled to debut during Paris Fashion Week on Saturday (Oct. 1), was recently spotted handpicking his fabrics, during a quiet shopping trip in London's East End.

The 'N----s in Paris' rapper, who has enlisted Givenchy creative director and designer of his 'Watch the Throne' album artwork, Ricardo Tisci, to mentor him, has made repeat visits to London Trimmings, a shop in Whitechapel, East London, where he has spent £14,000 (almost $22,000) on zippers and fabrics, in two trips.

"He turned up unexpectedly at first. He was very polite, interested in what we had to say," Owner Ashraf Loonat, 31, told the BBC. "What was really good was when I asked him [Kanye] why he was here himself he said, 'I want to work from the ground upwards, I don't want to leave it to someone else.'"

'Ye apparently visited the shop with an atypically light entourage. "He just had a couple of people with him," Loonat continued, though he did not specify as to whether they were the infamous leopard-print pants gang he rolled with to Paris Fashion Week 2009. "Personally I think he will probably come back. I think London has a special place for his label."

Kanye's 2012 womenswear collection, a collaboration with British designer Louise Goldin, will reportedly debut on Oct. 1, at 9:30PM, following collections by Jean Paul Gauliter and Loewe.

Lil Wayne Denies Competition With Drake, Says 'I'm His Boss'

Lil Wayne will be appearing on the cover of the October/November issue of Vibe Magazine, and in the feature story, he addresses his rumored rivalry with Young Money artist Drake, claiming it would be "impossible" to compete with his own artist, or anyone else, for that matter.

"There's no competition [with any artists]. Music isn't about competition no more," Wayne told Vibe. "All the gangster rappers are happy, all the skateboard rappers are happy, all the white rappers are happy ... Everybody just happy to do music these days. There are no problems. That s--- died a long time ago with them old-ass rappers. We are just making music, making money and having fun feeding our families. Competition is for the old guys."

When asked whether he views his protégé Drake as a potential threat, Weezy once again brushed their supposed contention under the rug, explaining, "I'm the guy's boss."

"I don't look at it like that [as competition]," the Young Money leader said. "Drake is my artist. If he wasn't my artist, then yeah maybe. But that's my artist. He's not [just] a friend. We're more than friends. It's business. It would be impossible for it to be a competition. I mean, I'm the guy's boss. "

Wayne also addressed his recent Jay-Z diss, 'It's Good,' reiterating his assurance that the 'H.A.M.' rapper would not respond.

"I know for a fact, music is about perception. You can't do anything but perceive what you hear. If I know that for a fact, I can never be upset about someone's reaction to it. I'm not gonna say I don't know what will happen before I say it [on record]. I do know what will happen. I am aware of it," Wayne said. "Every man should know the repercussions and consequences behind whatever they do before they do it. And of course, I know there won't be any repercussions behind what I did."

T.I. Is Free, Released From Halfway House in Atlanta

T.I. is a free man yesterday (Sept. 29), after spending 10 months in an Arkansas federal prison.

The rapper, who was arrested in Los Angeles on drug charges and for violating probation for firearms offenses in 2010, was released last month to a halfway house to complete his federal custody sentence. However, the 'Bring 'Em Out' creator was forced to return to prison in Arkansas after he was suspected of conducting business during his 375-mile relocation trip to Atlanta with his wife and two industry executives.

On Sept. 15, the 30-year-old lyricist was released once again and sent to the Dismas Charities halfway house in Atlanta to complete his sentence. The New York Times reports that there was little "fanfare" as he exited in a chauffeur-driven car.

Tip, born Clifford Harris, will celebrate his freedom during a brunch in Atlanta. The first annual A King of Oneself brunch is presented by men's lifestyle fashion brand AKOO Clothing, owned by T.I., and Grand Hustle Entertainment, his label.

The entertainer is currently working with VH1 on a documentary series showcasing his release from prison and life thereafter.

Sugar Hill Records Founder Sylvia Robinson Dead at 75

Sugar Hill Records founder Sylvia Robinson died early Thursday morning (Sept. 29) as a result of congestive heart failure. The music business executive, often credited with the title "Mother of Hip-Hop," passed at 6:28AM EST at Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus, N.J., at the age of 75.

Robinson, a former singer, was credited with pushing hip-hop's first track into the mainstream spotlight. 'Rapper's Delight,' the 1979 smash belonging to the Sugarhill Gang, is widely recognized as the first rap song to be released by a hip-hop group. She was also instrumental in the release of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five's 'The Message.' She also co-founded Sugar Hill Records in 1979, alongside her husband.

On the performance front, the lauded industry leader was part of Mickey & Sylvia, an R&B team that disbanded in the '50s but not before uniting for their song, 'Love Is Strange.' She went on to record solo records like 1973's 'Pillow Talk,' which nabbed a No. 3 slot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Before her death, she was reportedly ill for five months.

Robinson has three sons, Joseph Robinson Jr., Leland Robinson and Rhondo Robinson, and was wife to the late Joseph Robinson Sr.

Pregnant Beyonce Hates Jay-Z's Smell

Expectant mother Beyonce says her sense of smell is on the fritz and apparently hates the way her hip-hop hubby Jay-Z smells.

While promoting her new Pulse perfume on ET Canada, Beyonce, 30, admitted that she can't stand the signature scent of Jay-Z, 41, anymore. "I smell everything," she said. "If it smells bad, I smell it. My husband's fragrance, his one that I always love, I hate right now. So thank God I have this one!"

Beyonce's sense of smell is not the only sense that has gone haywire since she announced her pregnancy last month, the singer reportedly has been experiencing some crazy food cravings for delicacies like ketchup-smothered bananas, Oreo biscuits and gherkins.

The couple has reportedly wasted no time prepping for the arrival of their first child, already searching for a nanny for their superstar offspring and lining up a live-in baby expert for the first month of future Jayonce's life.

While Beyonce's mom Tina Knowles claims the sex of the baby is still unknown, Queen B has reportedly already purchased a pair of pink Christian Louboutin baby booties and a source tells Us Weekly that the power couple has already picked out a name. "Jay told his sister to order a whole wardrobe of baby-girl clothes!" a source told the magazine.

New Couple Alert -- Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks!

Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks are the music business' newest celebrity couple! Looks like Derulo, 22, who's album 'Fututre History' just hit the shelves, has found his 'It Girl' in the former 'American Idol' champ, 21.

Jordin, who revealed a new slimmed-down figure this summer, snuggled up with her man during a dinner date at Philippe Chow in West Hollywood on Sunday night (Sept. 25) at a belated 22nd birthday celebration for Derulo. Jason's rep confirms to Us Weekly that the pair have been seeing each other since August, when the pop stars played a show together in the Bahamas. There was no comment from Jordin's rep.

An insider close to the new couple told Us Weekly that after being friendly for years, Derulo saw the newly svelte Sparks, "in a whole new light in the Bahamas. She lost over 30 pounds and looks amazing -- and he told her. It started there and they have been really reconnecting, now as lovers and not just friends."

"Jordin would sing to him occasionally through the night in his ear if her head was rested on his shoulder," a witness told Us Weekly. "It was Jason's only night in L.A. and the pair were excited to reunite."

Michael Jackson's Children Saw Him Fight for His Life

The manslaughter trial in the case of Michael Jackson's death commenced this week and shocking details are coming to light surrounding the events that occurred at his home on June 25, 2009.

TMZ reports that the King of Pop's head of security, Faheem Muhammad, took the stand and claimed he was present when Jackson's son, Prince, and daughter, Paris, witnessed Dr. Conrad Murray attempt to resuscitate their father.

According to Muhammad, Prince "was shocked and slowly crying" and he saw Paris "on the ground, balled up crying" when he came to the scene of the singer's lifeless body, which was on an upper level of the Jackson residence. In his testimony, the bodyguard said he took the children downstairs once he realized they were bearing witness to the 'Thriller' creator fight for his life.

Dr. Conrad Murray reportedly asked those in the room if they knew how to perform CPR, and Muhammad's fellow bodyguard, Alberto Alvarez, offered assistance as a result. However, Jackson's assistant, Michael Amir Williams, announced Jackson had passed. At that time, Muhammad decided to prevent Murray from getting near Jackson's body.

"The prosecution is trying to create in the jury is a sense that this is a doctor who had absolutely no idea what he was doing," says CBS News legal analyst Trent Copeland. "It's an emotional setting. The children are on the ground, they're crying. Dr. Murray is sweating, doesn't call 911."

Details emerged of the hospital chaos as well, where Jackson's body was taken. Murray allegedly provided no information to doctors working on the lauded entertainer that he might have overdosed on the anesthetic propofol.

On the Radar: 15 Artists to Watch

Long before the biggest names in hip-hop and R&B had a chokehold on the Billboard charts, they were struggling artists looking for their big break. It used to be that aspiring MCs and singers had to sell their music out of the trunk of their cars, in hopes of getting a shot at stardom, but with the popularity of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, the game has long since changed.

In light of a music year that has celebrated underground artists and catapulted them into the mainstream spotlight -- think Tyler, the Creator's Best New Artist win at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards -- The BoomBox highlights an array of artists making big moves in their respective careers. While some mic holders on the list may be familiar, there's always someone who still needs to be put on to their magic. Then there's others whose buzz has the streets talking. Here's 15 up-and-comers making their mark in the the hip-hop and R&B game.

15
Elle Varner

Singer Elle Varner was pretty much destined to be a musician. The child of two songwriters, Varner developed an early love for singing and began playing instruments by the first grade. Varner has noted Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell and Chaka Khan as some of her musical influences, which can be heard in her soulfully edgy vocals. The MBK/J Records talent's latest single, 'Only Wanna Give It To You,' features Roc Nation signee J. Cole.
14
Luke James

There are lots of male R&B singers in the game, but something about Luke James stands out from the crowd. The New Orleans native got his start behind the scenes, penning tracks for the likes of Chris Brown and Justin Bieber, but being in front of the spotlight is where he shines. James has a knack for conveying a soulfulness in his music and is a signee to super producer Danja's New Age Rock Star imprint.
13
Casey Veggies

He's only 18, but Casey Veggies is far from new to working hard in the music biz. The Los Angeles native went from top basketball prospect to aspiring hip-hop star, releasing his first mixtape, 'Customized Greatly Vol. 1,' at the age of 16. Since then, Veggies has dropped a handful of other projects, all while still attending high school. Since he recently graduated from his scholastic endeavors, he can focus on climbing the ladder of rap success.
12
Outasight

There's been a lot of good musicians to come out of Yonkers, N.Y. -- Mary J. Blige, Jadakiss and DMX -- and rapper-singer Outasight might just be the next big thing to hail from the city. Releasing six mixtapes as a free agent, it was only a matter of time before a major label came calling. Last year, Outsaight signed with Warner Bros. Records. His latest mixtape, 'Figure 8,' dropped in April.
11
Phil Ade

The hip-hop coming out of the tri-state DMV area -- Washington D.C., Marlyand and Virginia -- has been known to be eclectic yet unique at the same time, which is why Phil Ade joins this list. A self-proclaimed "everyday person rapping about everyday things," the Maryland MC signed to DMV crooner Raheem DeVaughn's 368 Music Group imprint, and has been generating a healthy amount of online buzz around the Twitterverse and beyond.
10
Jay Rock

West Coast MC Jay Rock is among the new school of Left Coast rappers making noise in the game. The 25-year-old pulls double duty as a solo artist and member of the rap group Black Hippy, alongside Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul. In July, Jay dropped his long awaited debut, 'Follow Me Home,' featuring production credits from Cool & Dre, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and Terrace Martin.
09
Mac Miller

If Donald Trump compares you to the second coming of Eminem, you're kind of a big deal. Maybe The Donald only gave rapper Mac Miller the compliment for naming a song after him, but that still counts. Last year, the rhymer signed to Rostrum Records -- home to Wiz Khalifa -- and released his first mixtape, ,K.I.D.S.' Since then, he's received over a million views on YouTube for his 'Donald Trump' single, and appeared on the VH1 show 'Single Ladies.'
08
Childish Gambino

You may know Donald "Childish Gambino" Glover from his role as Troy Barnes on the NBC comedy 'Community,' but his rap alter-ego is much more interesting. During his time off from the show, the 27-year-old easily slips into MC mode, performing during the Rock the Bells tour this summer. Gambino got his name from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator -- yes, that's a real thing -- and has been touring the country under the moniker since signing with Glassnote Records.
07
Theophilus London

Theophilus London is as polished as they come when it comes to his fashion sense, but his music is definitely out of the box. The Brooklyn native dropped his debut, 'Times Are Weird These Days,' in August, and is well on his way to changing the hip-hop game. Like a handful of MCs who are more interested in rocking a tailored suit than a gaudy diamond chain, London's music marries pop, punk and even R&B, all with a refreshing uniqueness.
06
Machine Gun Kelly

Machine Gun Kelly is a bad a-- and that's why we like him. As if his name wasn't proof enough, in late August, the Cleveland native rallied a fan flash mob via Twitter that ended with him being carried out of an Ohio mall by police. Earlier this year, the 21-year-old announced that he was signing to Sean "Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy Records imprint. Having already released a bunch of mixtapes, his major label debut, 'Lace Up,' should live up to the hype.
05
The Weeknd

The Weeknd is trying hard to remain so unknown that we don't really know much about him, but thankfully the music speaks for itself. The Canadian R&B singer released his nine-song mixtape, 'House of Balloons,' in March, and has had the industry buzzing about his sonic interpretation of the multi-facets of love. Tackling the likes of Drake's 'Trust Issues,' in promotion of his second mixtape, 'Thursday,' The Weekend showcases his originality even when he's covering someone else's music.
04
Meek Mill

You'd think working under a boss like Rick Ross would be daunting, but Philly native Meek Mill can hold his own. The 24-year-old started out under T.I.'s Grand Hustle label before legal troubles and a stint in jail prevented him from going through with the deal. Now an official member of the Maybach Music crew, Mill couldn't be in a better position. His gully style and lyrical wit set him apart from any would-be competition.
03
Kreayshawn

Say what you will about Natassia "Kreayshawn" Zolot, but she's got people talking. The Bay Area native raised on the streets of East Oakland, Calif. released the single 'Gucci Gucci' in May, and received over 2 million views of her video in two weeks. Although her music is more adolescent foolery than ghetto street tales, it was enough to make Columbia Records take notice, signing her to a reported seven-figure deal. If nothing else, it'll be interesting to see what the future holds for Kreayshawn.
02
Kendrick Lamar

When Dr. Dre gives you a co-sign, you've pretty much made it in the industry. Compton-bred rapper Kendrick Lamar
has been bubbling under the radar since last year, when news broke that Dre added him to his 'Detox' album. Several other veteran MCs like Snoop, Kurupt and Game have all proclaimed him the "new king of the West Coast," and at 24 years old, with a handful of mixtapes under his belt, he just might be worthy of wearing the crown.
01
Frank Ocean

Just shy of releasing his debut, Frank Ocean's resume already includes work with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Nas. Not bad for a singer-songwriter who was a virtual unknown just a year ago. Although it seems the more popular he gets, the more of a recluse he becomes, Ocean is the perfect cocktail of elusiveness and explosive talent. As a member of the Odd Future collective, the New Orleans native's music is not only genre-bending but unlike anything we've heard in a while.

Roberta Flack Plans Beatles Cover Album, Drops Single

Legendary four-time Grammy award-winner Roberta Flack is back with a Beatles tribute album after an eight-year hiatus.

The songstress, who is most noted for tracks like 'Killing Me Softly' -- which inspired rap groups like the Fugees to cover it -- debuted her first cover, the 1965 hit 'We Can Work It Out,' this week (Sept. 27) on iTunes. The full album release is expected in February 2012.

"Love, inspiration, friendship and my own life's lessons come together when I sing the songs they created. I am honored to be a part of the fabulous legacy of the Beatles, " the R&B icon said in a statement.

Flack catapulted to stardom in 1969, with her debut cover of Ewan MacColl's 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,' the same year the Beatles released 'Abbey Road.'

She lived alongside John Lennon and now, Yoko Ono, in the famed Dakota building in New York City -- where Lennon was murdered in 1980 -- so the musical influence of the Beatles infiltrated both her personal and professional career.

"I live in the same building [The Dakota] that John [Lennon] did up until the day he died. As a matter of fact, on the same floor -- and I'm a friend of the family." she told Spinner.

"My passion for this project comes from the magical genius of the greatest songwriters of all time," Flack added in a statement.

J. Cole's Debut Headed for First Week Sales of 225,000

J. Cole's debut has only been out since tueday (Sept. 27), but sales have already been brisk. According to Hits projections, 'Cole World: The Sideline Story' is on pace for opening week sales between 225,000 and 250,000 -- no small feat, given the current state of the music business.

This is good news for Jay-Z's Roc Nation label, which made the 26-year-old MC its first signing nearly two years ago. Cole has been building buzz ever since, dropping mixtapes and EPs, guesting on other artists' tracks and touring with Rihanna, with whom he was rumored to have had a fling with but he's since squashed the talk.

Cole marked the album's release in New York City, where he went on w promo blitz that included a rooftop performance, an interview with Hot 97's Angie Martinez -- his first time being on her show -- and an album signing at J&R Music World.

Though he was busy with fans, he took time to let his Twitter followers know that they could purchase the LP digitally due to many stores -- including locations in his hometown of Fayeteville, N.C. -- selling out fast. "Yall sold out so many stores today. Itunes it for now, stores will re-up tomorrow. We on pace. Much Love!" he tweeted. "Had a crazy day, so I missed a lot of yall love I'm just now hearin about. Overwhelming. Thank you! #coleworld."

The BoomBox followed J. Cole during his hectic day. Stay tuned for our Day in the Life feature with the 'Can't Get Enough' creator.

Ziggy Marley Says Marijuana Is 'Nutritious,' Tour Is 'Best Ever'

Most of today's younger generations have only really experienced Bob Marley through music or sparse interviews. However, the spirit of the legend undoubtedly lives on through his eldest son, Ziggy Marley. Ziggy's career in music began in the late '70s, alongside his father and siblings on the track, 'Children Playing in the Streets.' His reign as bandleader of the Melody Makers showed the family journeying into pop-friendly reggae music, picking up where their father left off. His solo career has consistently displayed a natural talent, whose music translates fluently through live performances. Three decades later, Ziggy is on his sixth solo album, 'Wild and Free,' and in the midst of his Forward to Love tour.

The iconic Marley is an admitted naturalist, and after all of this time, he still builds his music based upon a vibe. That vibe has carried him through all corners of the globe, currently in the US, where his live shows have moved fans to send personal messages to Ziggy online. His new foray into social networking -- find him on Facebook and Twitter -- has afforded him the opportunity to hear these stories firsthand and inspires him to continue. While the music is still moving, he's working with famed artist Jim Mahfood on a graphic novel series titled 'Marijuana Man.' Ziggy also hopes to go into acting and pursue other creative projects outside of music.

In speaking with The BoomBox, the big brother Marley talks about the important uses of the marijuana plant -- he says it's nutritious -- what he hopes for his children, the direction of his music and his new weed-inspired comic book.

You've been in the industry making music for decades. What still keeps you going?

Keeps me going? Well, the inspiration. I'm inspired to do music. I really can't stop unless I stop being inspired. The continual need for ideas, consciousness, messages for the world, for people. I feel we provide through music. It's the inspiration that causes us to say the words we're saying. So that's why I cannot stop unless the inspiration stops.

Over the years as your tours have progressed, what have you done differently live?

I think this tour [Forward to Love] is so far going to be the best tour I've ever done. I just kind of been touring so much I understand the audience, I understand people, understand the musicians. I think the connection is much more stronger now because over the years I've been learning and picking up things as I've gone on the road.

T.I. to Celebrate Freedom Over Brunch, Drops New Verse

At the risk of underestimating the chefs employed by U.S. correctional facilities, we're guessing it's been a while since T.I. has had a decent mimosa or plate of eggs Benedict.

Maybe that's why the rapper is throwing a brunch this Sunday (Oct. 2) to celebrate the end of his 11-month incarceration. The Atlanta MC was convicted last year of violating his parole, and following a stint at a federal prison in Arkansas, he's finishing out his sentence in an Atlanta halfway house.

As TMZ reports, Sunday's brunch -- the first annual A King of Oneself affair -- will be quite a blowout, with Diddy shipping in 150 bottles of Ciroc and reps from T.I.'s clothing line, AKOO, busting out tape measures and fitting VIPs for custom-made party favors.

While T.I. hasn't released an album since 2010's 'No Mercy,' fans starved for new music are in luck -- sort of. Earlier today, the website Rap Radar debuted a DJ MLK remix of Future's 'Magic,' featuring a brand new T.I. verse.

In the coming weeks, the Grand Hustle CEO will branch off into other artistic mediums, dropping a novel, 'Power & Beauty,' on Oct. 18, and starring in a VH1 documentary set to air in December.

Lauryn Hill Accused of Failing to Return Clothes, Sued

Lauryn Hill is in the hot seat again, but this time it has little to do with her vocal work. The 36-year-old New Jersey native reportedly held on to several pricey pieces of clothing and a fashion company is suing her as a result, TMZ reports.

The 'Ex-Factor' songstress was reportedly fitted for clothing courtesy of Via Davia Vintage, a vintage clothing and accessories store, for a European tour in 2007. In a lawsuit filed with L.A. County Superior Court, Hill is named as failing to return more than half of the items she was presented with.

Via Davia Vintage claims the new mother was given "an entire wardrobe of high fashion items" for the tour and agreed to compensate the company with a fixed weekly fee for four weeks.

However, Lauryn Hill apparently kept the clothing for longer than the agreed upon terms -- three months to be exact -- and only paid some of what she owed.

Last month, the former Fugees frontwoman was at the center of another lawsuit filed by her former guitarist, who claimed she owed him $3,600 in back wages and requested another $20,000 in punitive damages.

Nicki Minaj: New Album Will Give Fans ‘Life and Then Some’

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj rocketed to the top of the charts this summer with her Pink Friday single “Super Bass,” and she attributes part of its success to Taylor Swift. In a new interview, the Harajuku Barbie thanked the country crooner and teased her upcoming album.

Billboard caught up with the blonde Barb at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas over the weekend. “I want to publicly say again that Taylor Swift really launched that single into another stratosphere with just tweeting about it and rapping it and stuff, so thank you Taylor,” said Nicki, who performed the song with
Swift in L.A. late last month. “And she’s so cute and she’s like a big bowl of ice cream.”

A tight-lipped Nicki reiterated that her alter ego Roman will play a major role on her sophomore album. “All I can say is that Roman will definitely be a humongous part of the follow-up to Pink Friday,” she revealed. “I can’t talk about anything else that has to do with the sophomore album. All I can say is that I’m working on it and the fans are gonna get their life and then some.”

Justin Bieber Surprises Girlfriend With Staples Center 'Titanic' Screening

Quick -- what's the most romantic thing you've ever done? Sending flowers to your girl's workplace? Making her breakfast in bed? It doesn't matter: Justin Bieber's got you beat.

Last night (Sept. 23), the Canadian teen-pop godhead surprised girlfriend Selena Gomez by taking her to the Staples Center, where they watched 'Titanic' on the big screen, all by themselves, TMZ reports. The ridiculously good-looking pair had begun the evening by checking out Demi Lovato at L.A.'s nearby Nokia Theater, and after the concert, the sly Biebs led Gomez to the home of the Lakers via an underground passageway.

What's more, the superstar got use of the venue for the nice price of $0, since he's sold the place out three times. Bieber reportedly got the idea from 'Mr. Deeds,' which marks one of the few times an Adam Sandler movie has been used to woo a lady.

Rihanna Surprises Volunteers on 'Extreme Makeover' -- Watch

The non-profit organization Steps N Stages does important work, helping to support female military veterans, and on last night's (Sept. 25) season premiere of ABC's 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,' a pair of powerful women pitched in to say thanks.

One was First Lady Michelle Obama, and the other was pop diva Rihanna, who surprised a group of Steps N Stages volunteers backstage at one of her shows.

"You guys are definitely very inspiring," RiRi told the starstruck ladies, who were helping to fix up the Jubilee House, a shelter started in Fayetteville, N.C., by Navy veteran Barbara Marshall. "What you guys do is amazing."

In addition to chatting with volunteers -- many of whom served in the armed forces -- the singer donated concert tickets for Steps N Stages to auction off and raise funds for the project.

An exemplar of strength and resiliency, Rihanna seems like a natural to support female soldiers. Plus, as she proved in her explosive 'Hard' video, she looks pretty foxy in fatigues.

Jay-Z to Open Nets’ Arena with Concert Series, Speaks on Becoming a Father

Jay-Z

Jay-Z is coming home. The hip-hop impresario and Brooklyn native has announced that he will open the Nets’ new Brooklyn arena with a series of concerts next fall.

The 41-year-old rapper, who is part owner of the team, appeared at a press conference on Monday to reveal the Nets’ official name. “We have decided that the official name for the Nets will be the Brooklyn Nets,” said a proud Jay, who will move the franchise from New Jersey to Brooklyn for the 2012-13 season. “See I’m really giddy right now.”

He will also launch the 18,000-seat Barclays Center at Atlantic Yards with eight shows beginning in late September 2012. “I’m gonna open the building with a couple of concerts—one or two or eight,” he said. Dates have yet to be announced.

During a live interview with “Good Day New York,” the music mogul was also questioned about becoming a dad.

When asked if he was nervous about fatherhood, the well-dressed Jay said, “No, I’m not nervous. Everything’s great,” while shooting down rumors of Beyoncé’s pregnancy cravings.

He admitted that he knows the baby’s gender, but would not share it with the public. “We do, but I’m not gonna say, of course.”

Keyshia Cole and family

Keyshia Cole’s dreams turned to reality when she married her husband, NBA star Daniel “Boobie” Gibson, in paradise. The newlyweds celebrated their union for a second time in an island ceremony in Hawaii on Sunday.

My husband wanted me to have my DREAM WEDDING so he flew all of our family members here! He’s giving something I will NEVER forget! Amazing!” tweeted the 29-year-old singer, who previously tied the knot in Las Vegas in May. “This is soo absolutely beautiful! I’m so glad we’re taping this so you all can see! I got EVERYTHING I WANTED today! My husband is amazing!”

The bride was surrounded by her loved ones including her biological mother and sister, Frankie and Neffe, as she exchanged vows near a waterfall wearing a white ruffled designer gown.

The special day was documented by cameras for her new reality series “Family First,” premiering in February. The couple got engaged in January 2010 after meeting the year before. They have an 18-month-old son named Daniel Hiram Gibson Jr.

T.I. to Celebrate Homecoming with Lavish Party

T.I.

T.I. will celebrate his homecoming with a party fit for a king. An extravagant affair is being planned for the hip-hop superstar upon his release from a halfway house later this week.

Instead of the typical club bash, Tip’s family and friends will toast his return with a brunch in Atlanta. According to TMZ, the swanky event is costing a reported $100,000, with $20,000 being spent on food and an additional $8,000 on dessert.

Diddy is said to be providing 150 bottles of Ciroc, one for each person in attendance. VIP guests will also be measured for custom-made clothing from Tip’s apparel line AKOO.

The festivities are set to take place on October 2, two days after T.I. is released from a halfway house. Upon his return, he will resume taping his reality TV series “T.I.’s Family Hustle” and gear up for the release of his first novel Power & Beauty on October 18.

New Music: Chris Brown x Bow Wow – ’2 Young 2 Give a F**k’

Chris Brown and Bow Wow

Chris Brown and Bow Wow go back and forth boasting about their young, fly, and flashy lifestyle on “2 Young 2 Give a Fuck,” their latest collabo. Breezy rhymes about bagging babes and Bentleys, while Bow flaunts his paper and flies in G5s over the hard-edged Harmony production. The Cash Money rapper will link up with the “Deuces” singer on the “F.A.M.E.” tour, starting October 7.

New Music: B.o.B f/ Lil Wayne – ‘Strange Clouds’

B.o.B and Lil Wayne

B.o.B comes back with a vengeance on “Strange Clouds,” the first offering from his upcoming sophomore album. The Grand Hustle rapper trades aggressive rhymes with Lil Wayne over the foreboding beat, which will captivate hip-hop heads and radio alike. Instead of showering his girl with compliments on lighter tracks such as “Nothin’ on You,” Bobby Ray rains down on the hater parade.

“These ni**as wake up on my dick, at least have some breakfast first/ Ni**a keep your nourishment first and your mind on my lyrics ’cause what you hoping to accomplish, I already did it, bitch,” he raps.

Tunechi Li floats on that “Arnold Schwarzenegger” and arrests the beat with his wicked wordplay, rhyming igloo with jiu-jitsu. Prepare for the storm.
